Ah, mood swings.
Some days it can feel like you’re a teenager all over again!
Uncontrollable mood swings from absolutely nowhere. One minute your sunshine and daisies, and the next, it’s like the devil incarnate has taken over your body.
They come out of nowhere. Triggered by the smallest, most insignificant detail that normally you’d barely even notice. You feel completely out of control and wonder if it will ever end.
The good news, is that you can regain control over your mood swings instead of having them control you.
And the really exciting thing, is that it can be done with a few simple, easy to implement steps that you can do on your own.
1. Eat your broccoli!
Remember when your kids were little and you were forever fighting with them to eat their broccoli?
Guess what… Now it’s your turn!
Make sure you are eating cruciferous vegetables every day. They include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach, cabbage, chinese greens, silverbeet and brussels sprouts.
Cruciferous veggies are full of vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants. Interestingly, emotional instability and irritability are symptoms of not enough vitamin C!
Many of us are keeping an eye on fibre intake these days too as it helps keep us regular. But did you know that it also plays a role in keeping our hormones in check?
After hormones such as oestrogen are broken down by the liver and are ready to be removed from the body, fibre helps to “carry it along” through the colon for elimination.
Cruciferous vegetables also contain compounds called isothiocyantes.
While they might be a mouthful to pronounce, they work absolute wonders in the body. They support the liver to break down our excess hormones (which are driving our mood swings and hot flashes) and get rid of them.
They have also been shown to reduce the risk of various cancers!
All the more reason to pile your plate high with these delicious, crunchy greens.
2. Hydrate your way to happiness!
We all know that we should be drinking around 1.8 litres of clean, filtered water daily, but it’s so easy to forget!
Water is essential in supporting your body’s detoxification pathways and helps to flush the inflammatory toxins out through the liver and kidneys.
If you struggle with remembering to drink enough water, here’s a simple method to try:
- Get a clear, see-through 750ml water bottle and a permanent marker.
- Make a horizontal line halfway down the bottle.
- Then make another line halfway between the that line and the top of the bottle. Then one more halfway between the original line and the bottom of the bottle. You should now have 3 horizontal lines equally spaced on one side of your water bottle.
- Make another set of matching lines on the other side of the bottle.
- On one side, label the top line 10am, the middle line 11am and the bottom line midday. Turn the bottle around and now you’re going to label the other set of lines.
- Starting at the top label them 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.
Now, at the start of your day, fill your bottle right up.
Your goal is to drink to the first line by 10am, the middle line by 11am, the bottom line by midday, and finish the bottle by 1pm.
Then refill it and repeat with the lines on the other side.
This way, you will have made it through two full water bottles by the end of the day!
You can always jazz up the flavour too with a slice of lemon or lime, or a sprig of fresh mint.
